Playlist: Scorchio 2
Well, here we are again and it isn't even summer... Round my way the last few days have been, well, scorchio! At least three of recent days here in southern England, have breached 30°C (86°F) in the day - and barely dipped below 20°C (68°F) at night. Now, that might not be much for many of you, but for us, that is something akin to standing in a volcano. So here we are with another round of scorchio playlist tunes (90s British sketch show reference for the uninitiated) - we u

Chris Stamey
Betsey Trotwood, Farringdon: Sunday 17 May 2026 This was an interesting proposition; an acoustic show in a tiny venue I had never been to before, just ahead of my birthday, and a matinee show to boot - how could I refuse that temptation! To make things more intriguing, I last saw Chris Stamey play, with his old dB's songwriting sidekick, Peter Holsapple, way back in 1991. I only really knew the album they were touring behind at that time (Mavericks) - and to be fair, I have o

Since he fronted what was probably the most globally renowned and infamous of the west coast punk bands, Dead Kennedys, we will celebrate the start of his recovery by having him lead off our occasional musical meand

Grant McLennan: 20 Years On
I remember reading about Grant McLennan’s death in Rolling Stone. “Grant’s first love was words, but his true genius was with a tune.” (Robert Vickers, 2006) Having read the British music press a lot in my late teens (1980s/90s), I was aware of so many bands and knew so much about a great many of them, without ever really knowing anything about them. That was because much of the stuff being written about would not be played on daytime (or even early evening) mainstream radio

The Essential 10: The Kinks
This edition of The Essential 10, our quickfire introduction to a wide range of my favourite artists, features The Kinks; an act that managed a staggering 26 studio albums over a career that spanned 1963 to 1996. I have trawled their catalogue to come up with ten of my favourite tracks by them, including a few surprises (although, if you don’t know much about them, they may all be surprises). The Kinks came into my life very early on, as there were several of their singles am
