Pulp bassist Steve Mackey, dies aged 56

Very sad news has emerged this afternoon, that Steve Mackey, bass player with Sheffield great, Pulp, has died aged 56 following a three month battle with an (as yet) unnamed illness.

His wife Katie issued a short statement.

"We are shocked and saddened to have said goodbye to my beautiful, brilliant husband. Steve was the most talented man I knew, an exceptional musician, producer, photographer and filmmaker. As in life, he was adored by everyone whose paths he crossed in the multiple creative disciplines he conquered. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all the NHS staff who worked tirelessly for Steve. He will be missed beyond words."

He joined the band in 1989, ten years after their formation, but in plenty of time to become an integral part of the successful phase of their career in the 1990s. His first album was their third one, Separations and was on their classics, His 'N' Hers and Different Class, which included hit singles like Common People and Disco 2000.

His bandmates issues a message on Twitter:

"Our beloved friend & bass player Steve Mackey passed away this morning. Our thoughts are with his family & loved ones. Safe travels, Steve. We hope to catch up with you one day. All our love xx"

Mackey had been with the band on their 2012 comeback tour, but had opted out of the tour they are due to undertake later in 2023, citing a need to focus on some of his other projects that include photography and producing.

He had co-written and produced songs for the likes of MIA, Florence & The Machine and Arcade Fire. He also had a cameo in Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire, playing one of the Weird Sisters, a band that included his Pulp Bandmate Jarvis Cocker, along with Philip Selway and Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead.

Tributes poured in on Twitter.

"We are incredibly saddened to hear about the passing of Steve Mackey, legendary bassist of Pulp and established producer in his own right. A camaraderie that translated into their brilliant music. Our thoughts are with the band, his family and friends." (Rough Trade records)
