Pogues bassist, Darryl Hunt, dies

More sad news to bring you.

After losing Motown legend Lamont Dozier yesterday, it was announced that long-time bass player with The Pogues, Darryl Hunt has died this week, aged 72.

He joined the band in 1986 and played on the 1988 album, If I Should Fall From Grace With God, which included the now legendary Christmas tune, Fairy Tale of New York, with Kirsty MacColl.

Hunt was born in Christchurch in 1950, going on to study fine art at Nottingham Trent, which is also where he made his first foray into music, joining The Brothel Creepers, who later became Plummet Airlines.

The Pogues mixed a punk rock heritage with traditional Irish instruments and sounds, and Hunt stayed with them until their first demise in 1996. He first joined the Vendettas, with former Pogues' Spider Stacey and Andrew Ranken, before later moving on to form the band, Bish, who released an album in 2001. He then joined the newly re-formed Pogues that same year, going to play with them until the next break up in 2014.

The official Pogues Twitter account confirmed his death in a statement on Tuesday, saying that they were, "saddened beyond words" and also quoted some of his lyrics, "I know that you want to hear me catch my breath / I love you till the end."

Shane MacGowan said, "I am very sorry that Darryl has passed on, he was a really nice guy and a great friend and a great bass player." While another former bandmate, Spider Stacey said, "This is wretched. See you around the way, Daz."
